Officers forced the group of ten travellers to write “I did not follow the rules of lockdown so I am so sorry” 500 times.
Nationwide lockdown restrictions in India, imposed in late March, mean people are only allowed to leave home for essential reasons, such as buying food and medicine.
So police took a dim view of the group of tourists after spotting them out for a walk in Rishikesh.

In an attempt to stop the problem, police said they would be instructing hotels to only let foreign guests leave the premises if accompanied by a local helper.
Hotels who did not follow the order could face legal action, police say.
Rishikesh became renowned among foreign travellers thanks to The Beatles, who visited the town in 1968 to seek spirituality.
