Writer left outraged after grown men harrassed her 9-year-old cousin then sexually assaulted and mocked her when she defended the girl

A Nigerian writer has expressed outrage after two grown men made lewd comments fantasizing about sex with her 9-year-old cousin, then sexually assaulted her when she cautioned them about it.

 

@EfikIbi explained that she was waiting for her ride with her cousin, 9, when a grown man came close to the girl, rubbed her shoulder, and said, “this one go sweet oh.”

She said she spoke up for her younger cousin but the man’s companion walked up to her – EfikIbi – and sexually assaulted her by dipping his hand into her sweatpants to squeeze her butt, before echoing his friend’s words, saying, “She go sweet like her big sister.”

 

The men’s action made the writer scared and angry and when she reacted, they mocked her.

 

Another man passing by saw the commotion and came over to find out what was going on. The writer said that when she narrated what happened to him, he accused her of overreacting and added that the men were only admiring her cousin.

 

@EfikIbi said the encounter left her feeling helpless and scared, in addition to being angry.

 

“I can’t protect myself or anyone. I hate it here,” she wrote, adding, “If you’ve ever said women are overreacting, f**k you.”
