Umuahia Shoprite Shutdown Over Non-Payment Of Workers Salary

The Shoprite retail outlet in Umuahia, the Abia State capital was on Monday shut down by security personnel attached to the place over non-payment of their two months’ salary areas.

The security personnel who barricaded the main gate of the shopping mall prevented customers from gaining entrance into the premises.

The personnel, who shut down the place since 8am insisted that they would not open it until they receive bank alerts to confirm payment of their two months salaries.

AIT correspondent who monitored the development reports that the security personnel who though started receiving their alerts as at 5:45pm insisted that they would not open the place until every one of them got his or her own alert.

It was however gathered that the protest by the security personnel was sequel to the recent possession of the mall by Ecobank over default by the management to meet outstanding obligations.

According to one of the security personnel who pleaded anonymity, the management of the Ecobank visited the place last week to take possession with their own security personnel, whereas nobody bothered to brief them about the matter.

Meanwhile, neither the management of the bank nor the retail company could be reached for comments despite the efforts made.
