A young Nigerian police officer, name withheld for security reasons, who is facing a punishment for stopping his senior colleagues from extorting some young men who were riding in an expensive car on the highway has reached out to CorrectNG.com to narrate his ordeal.

According to the police officer, these young men clearly didn’t do anything except that they were riding a big car and this didn’t sit well with him, so he intervened to stop his colleagues from extorting them and now he is being served a punishment for the act.

I am a police officer currently serving in Imo State. I want to quickly explain something to you. Just this night we were on a normal patrol around Owerri, so my teammates saw a Lexus with about 3 guys inside the vehicle.

They immediately said let’s rush them, you know the story of police when the see fresh guys inside a flashy car. Inside me I wasn’t comfortable because I hate embarrassing people just to find a way to get some money from them. I couldn’t say a word because I am the most junior officer among us, so I kept quiet. We caught up with the vehicle in a traffic and my colleagues rushed out and order them all to come out of the vehicle. I wasn’t comfortable with that but I still remained calm and was watching.

I was asked to enter inside the car with the driver and one of the guys while they took two inside our vehicle. We drove off and the guy with me was asking me, officer what did I do? Inside me I was not happy with myself and the whole issue. I told the guy to remain calm that nothing will happen to them and no body will take any kobo from them.

We got to the office, I came out from the car and was thinking on what to do by the side while my colleagues were busy looking for a way to find something from them. I know it’s not good and totally wrong to humanity, so I called my uncle who was serving in the headquarters and explained the whole thing to him, that I don’t like such act and I am not comfortable working in patrol.

He told me to call my commander and explain the whole issue to him. I did exactly as he said. My commander called my colleagues and asked them to allow those guys to go. So when they left, my colleagues were so mad at me for making the call. They started rendering all kind of insults on me and even asked me to get out from the vehicle, that I won’t go out on patrol with them again.

I am not afraid of the outcome of the issue from my colleagues because they said they are going to sanction me for such act but I don’t mind receiving any punishment from them as I am proud of myself. I don’t want to put them into trouble or expose myself so that I won’t lose my job.

I am facing the punishment on Monday but I don’t mind, hence my mind is at peace with what I did.
