Former Governor of Anambra state, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has thrown his weight behind the detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

The elder statesman said that Kanu is his son, and he expressed disappointment over the circumstances surrounding his arrested and repatriation from Kenya.

Ezeife who spoke at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday while representing Ohanaeze Ndigbo, accused the Nigerian government of kidnapping the IPOB leader.

He said; ”He is my son, and whatever is the situation, he is my son. They did not bring him to court. They kidnapped him from Kenya. I am disappointed.”

He added; “We waited for three hours before the Judge (Justice Binta Nyako) came in. And at no time did we see Nnamdi Kanu, who was kidnapped from Kenya. I think we are very disappointed, that is the minimum way to say it.”

Kanu was rearrested and repatriated from Kenya to Nigeria by in June. On June 29, the court ordered the IPOB leader to be remanded in DSS custody pending the hearing and determination of the case.

The court also granted the request that the matter get an accelerated hearing to guard against delay in justice and fixed Monday to continue the trial. But the secret police failed to produce Kanu in court.

M.B. Abubakar, the lawyer representing the federal government in the matter, cited logistics reasons for the disobedience of court order, which had previously said Kanu should be returned to court on July 26 to hear a bail application.

He said the government was ready to allow the trial to continue in the absence of IPOB, but Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako said the government’s action was disturbing.

The case was adjourned to October 21.
