The plaintiffs: West Africa Youth Support/Development Forum

This is all happening because according to the managing director of the West Africa Youth Support/Development Forum, Peter Okoye aka Mr. P was scheduled to perform for a concert in Asaba on the 16th of June, 2019.

Mr. P allegedly collected the money meant for the performance and made a video stating that he would be performing live. However, he never showed up. According to the managing director:

Mr P actually killed the show by not turning up for the event. Many people wanted to see him perform live. We lost over 33 Million Naira because he didn’t show up. The efforts of Sam John Obuh and other host of celebrities who honored the event to support our youth development through sports were killed by Mr P’s actions. We have sued him for over 500,000,000 naira. The organizations have written to him severally to refund the money but he refused. That’s why we are in court today, 23rd February, 2022 but the court has adjourned the case to 13th April, 2022.

People, myself included, are confused as to why Mr. P did not simply refund the money.

On the other hand, people are saying ‘nawa’ and calling the organization ‘greedy’ for their requests in the lawsuit. You see, they are not suing Mr. P only N500,000,000. According to court documents, they are also requesting:

  • An order for the payment/refund of the two million, eight hundred thousand naira being the 70% money sum paid to the defendant for his artistic performance he never exhibited.
  • An order in line with paragraph 11 above, for payment of Twenty-three Million, Four hundred thousand naira (N23,400,000.00), less four hundred and sixty five thousand naira, being money that would have realized if the defendant had come to perform.
  • An order for payment of Five hundred million naira (N500,000,000.00) being general damages for suffering of emotional, psychological and mental trauma, loss of goodwill and dent on the plaintiff’s image.
  • The three million naira being cost of this action.
  • A letter of apology to be published in any of the national newspapers

In total, the group is asking for N528,735,000 in cash alone.

Now, my thinking is that maybe they are asking for this huge amount of money so that when they eventually settle, it would be on something substantial. N528 Million is A LOT of money to be asking for, especially for an event they’ve already said would have raked in N33 Million only.

I have so many thoughts about this. My major one is I just don’t know why Mr. P didn’t refund the money and announce way in advance that he would not be able to make the show.

I’m very curious to see what YOU think. Do you think the plaintiffs are wrong? Greedy? Do you think Mr. P is in the right or wrong? Let me know what you think by leaving a comment on my Jide Okonjo Facebook post. I’m very interested in seeing what you think.
