“I Get Humiliated Everyday For Returning 100,000 Dirham” – Nigerian Dubai-Based Taxi Driver Explains
It is a game all of us have played at some point in our life – the game of what would you do if..?. For Dubai-based Nigerian taxi driver Abraham Aifegha, December 8th was no game. It was all too real. What would you do if you found 100,000 Dirham in the backseat of your car?
Abraham decided that for him, he would return the money to the owner. As you can imagine, a decision like that is not one that many people see as a decision that makes sense. Abraham says people have not been afraid to tell him their thoughts and express their disdain at the decision. Here’s everything Abraham Aifegha said about how he found the 100,000 Dirham, the reward he got after, and the insults he has received following that fateful day. Here’s what he said.

Speaking to Channels Television, Abraham said:
A week before the day (it happened), at my local church here in UAE, my pastor told me “I see you being wealthy”. On Wednesday of that week, behold, money in my car forgotten by a customer whom I dropped. That was on the 8th of December at around 5pm. I picked him up, dropped him, took a u-turn. Like 100 meters after, I picked another customer going to another destination. Then I found a little bag at the back of my seat. I opened it and I saw an envelope. I opened it, saw envelope again, opened it and saw 2 packs of 500 dirham, 100 pieces each that is 200 pieces altogether. That was 100,000.
My mind said ‘go and give him back the money, that’s not your money’. I never thought it twice, I didn’t even try to fight the mind. First person I talked to was my wife. She said, “look for the customer and give him the money back.”
There’s no camera in the car. If peradventure, I took off, it would have been between me and God. But I see it as stealing, big one. So I gave the guy the money back and I told him “be careful next time”.
The following day, my office called and I explained what happened. On 14th of December, they called me and gave me a certificate of honesty and a 500 Dirham award. I went back to my duty post.

But it has not been easy with insults. I’ve been insulted. Sometimes I pick some customers and they’ll be like “you’re a Nigerian?”, I’ll say “yeah”. Then they’ll say “how do you see this funny guy that returned 100,000?” Some say “That guy is a fool!”. So I’ve been humiliated a lot. Only few will say “you did well”, but a lot of people criticize. When has being honest become a crime?
Being honest can never be a crime my brother! No matter what anybody says, deep inside, they will always now have great respect for you. It is not easy to do what you did Abraham but you are evidence that good people still exist in this world.
