Cry For Help: School pupils take classes under trees in Kogi community

A Local Government Education Authority (LEA) School in a small community in Kogi state is presently dilapidated and pupils now learn under the trees.

According to SaharaReporters, the LEA School is in Ayeke, the hometown of the Kogi State Commissioner for Agriculture, David Apeh.

Photos of the pupils in their open space classrooms under trees have begun circulating on social media.

The sorry state of the classrooms have been issues of concern even before a stormy weather destroyed the roofing sheets, leaving the pupils at the mercy of the scorching sun – a situation which gradually forced them to make use of the trees in the compound.

The dilapidated and neglected state of the LEA school forced many parents to withdraw their children from the school, but a good number of pupils whose parents had no option still attend – with the school average population around 50 pupils.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, a parent lamented; “This has been the situation in this school”

“Most of us have withdrawn our children from LEA school. If this happens in the dry season, imagine what will befall the school in the rainy season. Which of these politicians can send his children to this kind of school? They stay in Abuja, Lagos and Lokoja, and this is the best they can offer to the people who voted them into office?”

Apeh Kelvin, President of the Ibaji Progressive Youth Foundation, one of the foremost groups representing the communities, said the school needed urgent government’s attention.

“This is so unfortunate. The pupils are learning under this sorry condition in the village of Honourable David Apeh. Ayeke is one of the ten wards in the Ibaji Local Government Area. The officer in charge of school monitoring in the Ibaji LGA, Michael Edeche, is also from Ayeke. We are calling for the government’s support,” he said.
